Phantom Halls: New Update Adds New Character, Enemies, Area, and More

Icendium Games have today released a new content update for their early-access adventure horror title, Phantom Halls.

Graveyard Shift, the latest update for Phantom Halls, adds the mansion’s cemetery to the selection of areas that the game can pool for it’s procedurally generated haunted house. The update also adds several new enemies, a new playable character -The Writer- and extra quests for each of the extant playable characters.

In addition to the new quests for the characters, there’s also been revisions to the combat mechanics, and the abilities system for characters – with new passive and active abilities added to the game.

The game, for those not aware of it, has the player playing as one of a plethora of horror-movie stereotypes as they explore a procedurally assembled mansion on player specific quests. As players meet other survivors they join the player’s ranks, with the player taking control of their attacks and inventory. In many ways it captures RPG party mechanics, while increasing management complexity as you gain the additional attack-power of the extra party members.

Phantom Halls launched into early access in March of this year, following a very successful Greenlight Campaign. The game itself is actually -from my time with it earlier in the year- extremely stable at the minute, with the developers using their planned time in early access to bulk out content, and to finesse controls.

On the subject of future plans for the game, the developers have said the following on the game’s Steam Page.

“How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

The full retail version of the game will have around 100 quests, 20 playable/unlockable characters, combinable and customizable weaponry, thousands of lines of dialogue, all manner of enviroments, platforming elements and hazards, dozens of enemy types, metroidvania-esq mansion maps and an archive of all your conquests and defeats. There will be various play modes (Free form adventure, Questing, Time Trails, etc) and we also hope to bring multiplayer to the game for the full version, whilst the Early Access offering is focused on the single player campaign.”

Graveyard Shift is the first of many updates planned for the game ahead of it’s launch in late 2018.

I managed to get some time with the game and the studio’s creative director, Llexi Leon, earlier in the year – keep your eyes on the site for the follow up piece early next month. You can find the launch trailer below the link to the game’s Steam page.
