Second Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Dev Diary Focuses on Sounds & Music

DotEmu and Lizardcube have released a second developer diary regarding their upcoming Wonderboy III remake; Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap.

I am a massive fan of the Wonder Boy games, having cut my teeth on them on the first console I ever called my own; the Master System. As such 2016 has certainly had a few highlights in it’s managing to see the series’ return realised with not just one title but three.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is the most enigmatic of the three. As I stated back when it was first announced back in June it’s a project that has been rattling around for some time, with one of the Lizardcube founders (Omar) well known over on TIG for analysing the original from the very code from the game’s cartridge in a fascinating, in-depth manner. While it was the second to be announced (the first, Monster Boy was originally a Kickstarter project for a Flying Hamster sequel) it was immediately fully supported and received good grace to use the original’s name.

As we stopped doing news between that original piece and now, I’ve also included the first dev diary below, in case you missed it.

The second D.D. focuses on the audio side of the game, giving us a look at the instruments and efforts that have gone into the new version of the title, and also giving us a look at the work of Romain Gauthier’s Foley artistry. It makes for very easy watching, and for fans of the original very easy listening as well.

One thing I would say is that the section of the video focused on the sound effects was actually a little jarring; I don’t think I’ve ever experienced the games without their catchy music, and the moment where the music is removed to highlight the sound effects work -while highlighting the effects perfectly- really goes to show just how important the audio is to the overall game experience.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is expected to release on Xbox One, PS4 & PC at some point in 2017.
