Our Picks from the Start Your Engine Festival

0

PlayTogether Studio has put together the Start Your Engine Festival on Steam. This is a festival that brings together a bunch of different vehicle-related games, through many different genres. Some have you surviving, some are on the simulation side, and others are racing! All of these titles feel quite different, but they do all feature vehicles. We picked our favourites from the Star Your Engine Festival:

Fruitbus

“After your grandmother’s passing, you have been left with her food truck. This food truck is home to many memories that you shared with your grandmother. Not only that, but it was also a local staple to a bunch of small towns, where lots of different people have tons of lovely memories of your grandmother. Now, you must take over and live up to your grandmother’s legacy! Fruitbus is a wholesome, lovely adventure game where you are just looking to bring joy, and food, to people.”

Dredge

Dredge is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for something new to keep them busy, especially fans of resource management sims such as Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley. There are some lulls while you’re moving from one area to the next, but the constant worry of danger lurking from the seas that surround you keeps every moment engaging. I never felt like I exhausted my options at any particular archipelago when there was always a task to push me further away from the safety of home. Dredge manages to get the core gameplay loop tight and entertaining, and while the horror elements may seem overwhelming to players that might turn their nose up at traditional horror games, it serves its purpose here without overwhelming the senses.”

Flotsam

Flotsam takes place on a planet not unlike ours — one filled with cities full of skyscrapers, polluting factories and too much plastic products. Sadly, because of the hubris of the inhabitants, and their inability to change their way of living, the whole planet floods with the water from the ice caps. Now the only way to survive is on floating towns, and sailing from place to place to scavenge what you can to live another day.”

FAR: Lone Sails

“I firmly believe that FAR: Lone Sails is truly a rewarding game and an even more rewarding work of art. Some player reviews have focused on the limited and sometimes repetitive nature of the game’s mechanics and platforming, but I find this criticism to be somewhat short-sighted — there is far more to this game than just its gameplay. The combination of simple yet engaging environmental puzzles, elegant artwork and a masterful soundtrack make for a deeply impactful experience. Truly, the greatest meaning is found in its journey, not its destination.”

Make Way

“It’s wild, hectic, and such an amazing idea — whoever designed these different bits of track has a creative and fun mind. I found myself genuinely challenged and upset when I was dying (which happened over and over). The building aspect of this game ensures that each time you play feels completely unique, especially due to the combinations of race track pieces that are available as you expand the track at each checkpoint.”

Minit

“Minit is an adventure game which plays out a minute at a time, with the player heading out to various areas around the protagonist’s house and completing actions which then alter the circumstances of the next restart. As the trailer below shows off, this can be as simple as grabbing a piece of equipment to reaching (relatively) distant landmarks to open up a shortcut to a new area.”

There are a lot of games in the featured in the Start Your Engine Festival that each have different vibes to them. This festival ends on May 19th, so have a look through and see if anything jumps out!
