Broken Arrow has received a new DLC that expands the Russian forces in the modern-set, tactical wargame that posits a what-if about a Baltic war between Russian and American forces.
Russian Guard adds two new maps, as well as a Russian specialisation that focuses on beefing out their forces with new units and tactical options. The Russian Guard contains eight new units ranging from reservists and national guard-style forces through to FSB Snipers and Spetsnaz. In addition to that they’re supported by extra equipment and fire support offerings.
The above is also joined by two new scenarios which use those maps, and 20 unique weapon loadouts. In total, the DLC adds the following:
A new Russian Guard specialisation for the Russian faction
8 infantry squads with 20 unique weapon loadouts
31 new ground and air units
2 new maps: Daugavpils and Coal Mountain
2 new scenarios featuring the Russian Guard
A new AI army for Skirmish mode
A new hangar theme
We reviewed Broken Arrow following its full release late last year, remarking that “Right from the very start of Broken Arrow, way back in the tutorial, it was immediately obvious that depth and detail of units were major focuses of development.” Going on, we discussed how game changing the use of buildings for cover, and the flexibility of the order of battle made the whole thing feel: “On the other hand, when entering buildings, the entire building becomes a massive target for any unit within the vicinity and generally leads to your men being wiped out very quickly. I was expecting a Men of War style approach to buildings when being occupied with men breaking out windows and taking up positions but sadly they just seem to sit inside and shoot out with no real visual change. It does however give the units inside a clear line of sight on enemies and allows them to hit vehicles in return.”
Russian Guard isn’t the first DLC for Broken Arrow, however it is the first one that costs; Back in March the developer, Steel Balalaika, released Broken Arrow: Baltic Battalion, which was a free DLC that added a new army specialisation to the American forces, one symbolic of a combined, high-tech Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian force.
