Rhythm Towers is a beat-based, third-person tower defense

Rhythm Towers, from solo developer Innoloop, offers an interesting take on tower defence with a combination of a third person perspective, quick time dance sequences and classic tower defence construction and defence building.

We got to go hands-on with Innoloop’s upcoming Rhythm Towers while we were exploring the showflood of the recent Pocket Gamer Connects London. The demo version of it includes several towers, but even with just a handful I found myself cutting shapes on the dance floor as I built up my defences to defend against a number of bugs that clearly, simply hated my funk..

The bugs in question were described by the developer as “noise hating bugs that prefer to hear boring or bad music, so they hunt down your music as it evolves throughout the level.” As you create more towers, in greater numbers and strength, the theme music of the level changes with it keeping things surprisingly fast paced for a tower defence game.

The towers don’t just change the music but each tower also works in sync with what type of music is played from it. An example was that a cannon might affect the bass, leading to some truly unique combinations of fighting power and music mastery.

Rhythm Towers is playable both as a solo challenge or co-operatively, featuring up to four people defending at once with vibrant visuals and characters that lean into the vibrant aesthetic that the maps all feature. There is a roster of characters to choose from all with unique abilities to help you combat those bugs and keep your world safe.

With lots of replayabilty, great visuals and booming sound this seems to be a game to look out for in the near future. If you would like to have a look at Rhythm Towers yourself you can find the demo on Steam.

Rhythm Towers is in development for Windows PCs.
