Motion Twin Discuss Procedural Generation In Dead Cells
Motion Twin have published a new dev diary in which they discuss about using procedural generation in their title, Dead Cells.
Dead Cells, an upcoming Roguevania title in which players go through an ever-changing castle with the fear of permadeath lingering, and souls-like combat in a 2D environment. We have already seen three minutes of gameplay, and our EiC, Dann has already got his hands on the game at PC Gamer Weekender.
Motion Twin spend some time talking about the procedural worlds and how dying and rebirth can help progression rather than the usual approach of respawning and learning the world. Learning the world isn’t possible as each level is procedurally generated and brings new content each time, far more than Motion Twin would be able too should they have created the levels by hand. As well as awarding instinctive play, there’s a lot of replay value as well as diversity with each play. With permadeath floating around, it’s a nice difference for every respawn.
Not everything is procedural though, and the developers have put together a wonderful blend of procedural and handcrafted elements. The title is set to launch into Early Access sometime in Spring 2017 for PC. The dev diary is available to watch below.
