What type of game is it?
Sports
What’s the 30 second elevator pitch?
Five-on-Five hockey with all the crashing and smashing that makes the highlight reels, as well as a story mode that sets you as a team set for a down-and-out if they don’t pull together and win the league.
What do we like most about it?
After consoles transitioned to polygons the massive shift to realistic visuals and subsequently the move towards simulation and realism hit few genres harder than that of sports. It was a rare sports game that came out after that with a focus on the accidental violence; Red Card, and -I suppose- Skate.
As such, it’s really great to see a game based around hockey -a sport that I have only really seen as a sport where the armour is worn for a reason- get a game where you can simply write off enough of the opposition that you win by forfeit. Add to that a bespoke story mode that sees you rising against the odds through a league, and then a randomised league where you can play as any of the ten teams afterwards, and it looks to be a game well worth whatever the cost may be.
When’s it due?
Old Time Hockey is planned for release on Windows PCs in March of 2017.
