Greenlight Highlight | Landtraveller

Developer: Wolfcoder

What type of game is it?

Adventure RPG

What’s the 30 second elevator pitch?

Classic SNES RPG gameplay but with the modern conventions of crafting, world-altering and customisation. Build a town? Check. Populate it with NPCs? Double-check.

What do we like most about it?

I probably spoiled the main feature that I’m interested about with the pitch section; the NPC ridden town. Few RPGS have managed the NPC village creation well; my real highlight being Breath of Fire III’s Fairie Village, an optional element which could massively assist you if you put the time in. Land Traveller seems to include it from the get-go, which always bodes well for good execution of a mechanic in a game. If it can truly deliver on that then I am sold, regardless of the rest of the game.

But, what of the rest of the game?

The mention of the SNES earlier is deliberate, the entire game is set in the style, and from the viewpoint of, classic RPGs like Secret of Mana. Combat is real-time, with enemies visible from far afield as with most adventure games of the era.

While the description on the game’s Greenlight page is somewhat lacking, the wonderful exchange between the developer and a commenter who had attempted a similar idea previously is absolutely lovely to see; if not for the sharing of best practise, but also the view to clear communication between developer and community.

When’s it due?

Landtraveller has an estimated early access launch planned for Spring 2017, when it launches it will do so for Windows PC & Linux.
