DOOM 6.66 Update Makes All Multiplayer DLC Free, Revises Multiplayer Progression

The latest update for 2016’s DOOM isn’t just a landmark due to its version number, but also its effects on the games pricing and progression.

Version 6.66 of Bethesda’s DOOM brings forth a bounty of updates. For a start the publisher has decided to drop the price for the upcoming weekend down to $14.99 (US) / £11.99 (UK) / $17.99 (AUS) up until the 24th, they’ve also made chunks of the game free to play for the duration of the weekend, a try-before-you-buy if you will.

Other changes are more substantial however. The developer has retired the season pass and released all of the included multiplayer content (three DLC packs) for free; they include extra guns, new maps, new playable demons, new modes and more.

Multiplayer has seen major changes to its progression system, with a new system revolving around player-chosen unlocks replacing the previous system. This’ll mean that players can focus in on items they would like to receive as they progress, over the previous set-up. There’s been workarounds made for existing players, should they not wish to simply revert to this new system.

Hack Modules, which were timed modules, have been replaced with permanent runes which can be added to player load-outs as required.

There’s also been some tweaks to the game’s multiplayer HUD to allow it to inform of scoring and challenge call-outs, and more information will now be detailed when you fall in combat.
