The Pokemon TCG Mega Evolution – Pitch Black set is a game changer
Some collect Pokemon Cards for battling, some collect them to look pretty in their binder, and some simply buy them for the resale value of the current hit cards (booo!). But, with Mega Evolution – Pitch Black coming out so soon after Mega Evolution – Chaos Rising and with the fact that this expansion will be legal for the current World Championship, it’s a real meta shifting bunch of cards that, from just a moment of flicking through the boosters, feels like they’re going to hit hard.
The Mega Excadrill EX is surely set to be a card that can be adapted around to fill out or build a successful deck -in fact, we’ve seen Japanese players create hard hitting decks around this card. It’s got a high damage output, and if you manage to get your cards out early then you can rush the energy to get that damage done quick. It will be interesting to see how the decks change as these cards become more common in the Western market.
On the other hand, Banette from the Hide ‘n’ Sneak (previously called Ghost Veil) deck does look like it would support quite well, while actually not being too rare a draw.
There are some other very interesting cards; Slowbro has an attack that allows you to do more damage if there are no cards in your hand, whereas Bastiodon has the ability to prevent all damage done to each of your Pokemon by attacks from your opponent’s Pokemon if they’ve got 2 or less energy, as long as it’s out in play. These very different abilities already feel like enough to shake things up and add more interest into your decks.
Critically, the three of them really give you the chance to decide when and how combat happens, if you manage to get them out into play.
When it comes to our household, Amelia spent some time opening up all of the packs in the Mega Evolution – Pitch Black EBT that landed on our doorstep. She’s a collector above all else – keeping an eye out for full art cards. She was elated, there are some truly stunning full arts in this deck!
There are two different Mega Darkrai Ex cards, one of which being the Pitch Black Special Illustration rare, which is absolutely beautiful and simultaneously quite moody looking, matching the design of the box art for the EBT very well. There is also a Mega Darkrai Ex that has a green background, full art, which Amelia did pull from her packs.
Currently the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution – Pitch Black are in a pre-release phase, so there are different shops running competitions where you can get your hands on these cards ahead of the full release. It’s the perfect time t take a look at the decks and see how they work in actual play. Whether you are chasing for looks or chasing to add to your deck it’s great to see more cards out there collect.
