What type of game is it?
Town Management.
Turn Based RPG.
Tower Defence.
What’s the 30 second elevator pitch?
In a world where most things are cardboard you must build and manage a town to survive against the goblin masses, managing development, defences and the town guard in this collision of genres.
What do we like most about it?
It’s an amazing smorgasbord of genres, and it actually sounds like the developer might well pull it off. The game’s main focus is on building and maintaining the city; critically to provide enough food and defences to keep the population safe and fed. There’s plenty of building types on offer, and interestingly certain ones are said to negatively affect the procedurally generated world you are in – causing nature to lash out back at you.
From what I can gather the other two modes are split out over the aggressive, conflict side of the game. In the setting there are teleportation stones which have allowed goblins to push humanity back to it’s last stand, as such they will occasionally siege your city which you defend in a Tower Defence manner.
When you go on the offence however there is an RPG type tactical combat game, with your (named and stat’ed out) units attacking goblin strongholds for wealth and to destabiise the threat against you. As if that isn’t enough, that RPG system has levelling up built into it.
Phew, there’s a massive amount on offer here, and presuming the game can keep the difficulty curve -and frequency of shifting genre- under control then the game looks to be absolutely wonderful.
When’s it due?
Carton is nearly ready for launch, with a rough September release window for PC, Mac & Linux.
