Yes or No – Catching People Up
When it comes to party games, there are a bunch of different sub-categories — from working together through to plain-ol’ trivia. Over the years we’ve also reviewed games that need you to get up and dance, or even run the length of the room. Yes or No is a party game where you are looking to catch out your friends, through fast talking, familiarity and following a card.
Yes or No feels like an ice breaker game — a way to quickly get to know someone at a party setting. This is a card game where a player will pick up a card, turn to the person next to them, and start asking a bunch of questions as prompted by the cards. These questions might have more complex answers than the word yes or no at first, but the goal is to get the person that they are questioning to say the word yes, or no.
This can either be done through the timing and delivery of the questions written on the cards or through plain, old fashioned, catching someone out. The person reading the card, however, cannot really go off script. So, if they are asking questions and then the next question assumes what’s said, sometimes it doesn’t make sense to the conversation and everyone will start laughing. I feel that this adds to the confusion, which might result in somebody blurting out either of the words, however, when people are hyper-focused it sometimes feels a little disappointing.
It’s a very simple concept, it’s very fun to play with new people, and it does have a good variety of family-friendly topics for questions. The added bonus is that you might well learn a bit about the people around the table with you. The only real downside we found with Yes or No, was that people didn’t switch who they were talking to, with the question giver always speaking to the next person on the table. I do feel that it would be better with some house rules where people were switched around from time to time!
