Ticket to Ride has some brand new deluxe train upgrades and you definitely need them!
Ticket to Ride remains one of the most popular board games in modern history – possibly ever if we exclude Chess, Draughts and other truly timeless games.
There’s no doubt that when you ask almost any gamer what their go to game for “new players” is, Ticket to Ride will be among the options. But Ticket to Ride isn’t just a game that you grow out of, and it already has numerous map expansions and other ways to make it more complex. Now, the Ticket to Ride player in your life is about to get a host of new options to deluxify their copy of the game.
Priced at under £15 per set, Days of Wonder has just released five new sets of trains and stations in unique colours to replace those in the base game. These sets are intended to celebrate Ticket to Ride‘s 20th Anniversary and come in green, red, yellow, black and blue. We were sent a set of the red trains, and as you can see from the pictures these make for a super cute and finely detailed addition to your base game set.
For the red trains in particular, I particularly like the level of detail on offer. These classic “pullman style” passenger carriages feature a black base with moulded wheels and couplings, with a red plastic top section that shows classic details such as the windows and wood panelling on the roof. I’ve seen real carriages like this on model railways and at the York train museum, and I consider this style to be the most iconic of the Golden Age of Railways. Other sets (such as yellow) are equally well detailed, with cranes and freight or even sea container designs.
We reviewed the 15th Anniversary Edition a couple of years ago, and I thought that one of the things that made it extra special was the train designs. You’ll be glad to know that even if you have a special version of Ticket to Ride, the new train designs will differ. See the picture below (from Ticket to Ride 15th Anniversary Edition) and you’ll note that the red trains differ from those I’ve shown above (which come from the new deluxe train set.
At B3, we think Ticket to Ride is an all time classic. In addition to our Ticket to Ride 15th Anniversary Edition review, we’ve also covered the basic version of the game and the Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West legacy game.
