News | Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Revealed

DotEmu & Lizardcube have unveiled their reveal trailer for their upcoming remake of 1989 Master System classic Wonderboy: The Dragon’s Trap, and it looks lovely.

The more vigilant Wonderboy fans among you will have been aware of several projects over the last few years closing in on the adventure series (which in my opinion has more of a claim to give it’s name to the ‘Metroidvania’ platformer sub-genre) as there has been a long formed project over on the TIG forums to remake the classic, while FDG Entertainment’s second Flying Hamster game became Monster Boy over recent months.

Lizardcube’s Wonderboy: The Dragon’s Trap is in fact the title previously super visible over on [tIG Source] where the topic remains alive and active, and includes confirmation that the Wonderboy IP was licensed by DotEmu rather than the developer’s themselves.

As for the Monster Boy title – it’s still in development and moving along nicely, as you can see from the developer’s [recent blogpost] regarding the animal transformations in the game.

Back to Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. the game combines a wonderful hand drawn art style with the layout and enemy placements of the original game. There’s no word on any additional content coming to the game, however it’s clear that both art and music have undergone overhauls.

For those unaware of the original title, it saw you – the cursed hero – fighting your way across the land defeating dragons in an attempt to return to your human form. Each dragon you defeated turned you into a different character – each having different abilities, Piranha man swims, Hawkman flies. Combine this with hidden areas, special ability-clad equipment, and a wide world, and you had a wonderful adventure game – a very memorable one, in a memorable series.

Wonderboy: The Dragon’s Trap currently has no set release date, it’s confirmed for PC and ‘consoles’ however details are thin on the ground.
