Doomlings Mythlings Expansion spices up the inter-turn moments

0

The Doomlings Mythlings Expansion is all about playing out of order and building non-specialised decks.

The Mythlings Expansions is one of a bundle of ‘booster pack’ style expansions available for Doomlings. In this case, it includes 16 normal traits, a new dominant trait, a new age and a new catastrophe. In its own words it’s all about magic and mischief, and that pretty much checks out, with a lot of the cards deliberately working outside of normal turn order or triggering on discard.

Mythlings is probably one of the most chaotic of the Doomlings expansions, with cards interupting, inserting and destroying traits and turns when they crop up. Traits like Effigial (“You may play Effigial from your hand into an opponent’s trait pile when they plan an action”, colourless, gives -3 to final score) and Orchish Tusks (“You may play Orcish Tusks from your hand when an opponent plays a dominant trait”, green, +2 to final score) are great interruptions which can really distract an opponent, while cards like Witchy — which boomerangs back to the board when discarded — and Necromantic, which steals a trait an opponent is discarding, create a more intense game that everybody needs to pay much more attention to.

Ancient is also a game-changer, with you picking a colour and then drawing ten cards and keeping one of that colour. Great if you’re familiar with the cards that are left, through peeking or repeated play — or if you just want to dump a bunch of cards to the bottom of the deck.

As with many of the extra cards for Doomlings, it almost feels better to play with just one expansion plugged into the core game, especially when it comes to an expansion’s combo cards. In this case it’s Elven Ears, which gives +1 score for every Mythling card in play. A smaller deck means a higher chance of them showing up, but if you’re playing with every expansion in then it’s a card you’ll want to hold on until late game… and there are plenty of stronger cards for late-game play.

As with the Techlings expansion, the dominant card is quite powerful. In this case it’s ‘Legendary’ a blue card worth 8 points which has you fully purge your hand but not stabilise. It’s a great late-game deploy, but it also works great with the new era ‘Ozmorian Winds’ which has you pass a random card to your left after stabilizing.

Doomlings Mythlings Expansion is a great addition to spice up the inter-turn play, and is sure to keep you paying attention during games with higher player counts.

Doomlings Mythlings Expansion is available now from Amazon and from the Doomlings website.
