Our Picks from the Story Rich Showcase

0

Fellow Traveller has put together a Story Rich Showcase, which primarily features a bunch of unreleased games! Along side all of these upcoming story games, there is a selection of games you can purchase now, some of which are even on sale. We’ve hand-selected a bunch of games that have caught our eyes over the years from the Story Rich Showcase:

Citizen Sleeper

“It’s all very light-touch but it perfectly walks the line between being meaty enough to actually ensure that Citizen Sleeper is a game, not a visual novel, but not too much to distract. You won’t want to be distracted in Citizen Sleeper because it provides maximum opportunity for immersion; between the excellent music and sound design and wonderfully crafted characters and story, Erlin’s Eye is an engrossing place to visit and really draws you in. My only slight criticism on this front is that I found the anime-style design of the characters to be somewhat jarring and out of place, but that is really a matter of personal taste and not something that detracts from the game in any meaningful way. If you’re a fan of narrative-driven games and cyberpunk themes then Citizen Sleeper is about as good as you will find in the marketplace today.”

Paradise Killer

“Your main task is to find the killer, and present evidence to the Judge — an impartial entity fused into the Island itself. However you interpret it, whenever you interpret it — Paradise Killer puts you in the hot seat, as you use open-world exploration and uncover the many secrets that the 24th Sequence has to offer.

Be careful though. Not all secrets want to be found.”

Janet DeMornay Is A Slumlord (and a witch)

“Renting in this day and age is a big challenge, but in Janet DeMornay Is A Slumlord (and a witch), you’ve not only got rental problems, but also some supernatural ones that you need to deal with! Your landlords, to the new place you and your friends have rented, turns out to be a witch that wants to mess with you. You’ll now need to figure out a way to escape this new home you are in.”

Thank Goodness You’re Here!

“More releases should have “New game” replaced with “Gu on then”. Then there’s the brilliant way the game ends, almost poking fun at everything it’s done to you for the past couple of hours. Thank Goodness You’re Here feels like a labour of love from a team that just wanted to release a game for themselves and people like them. Odds are you won’t see another release like this for a long time, so if you need something funny in your life you should absolutely pick this up. You’ll thank goodness you did.”

Crow Country

“It’s hard to fault Crow Country. It sets out to be a 90s-inspired survival horror and it hits all the notes I would expect, even down to the short play time and end game ranking based on your performance. I was very impressed with my time with the game, but I could imagine a more modern audience perhaps not enjoying the esoteric puzzles as much as an older player that enjoyed the genre the first time around. Then again, that’s what online guides are for, so there’s not much excuse. This is probably my favourite horror game of the year so far, and we’re still months away from Halloween!”

Venba

Venba is an excellent, albeit short, experience that tells a story that I haven’t seen before. That uniqueness alone should be celebrated, but the fact that the game is so well put together is a testament to the development team setting out with a vision and executing it perfectly. Whilst there are secrets here, I don’t think they are necessarily worth seeking out, so the only real issue I might have is that this is a short, one-and-done experience. Not that I mind though, as I’d certainly prefer a tight, well-made, sub-two-hour experience over a twenty-hour slog, so even the length gets a tick in my recipe book.”

Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping

“Having finished the game twice, I won’t spoil anything for you (as I’m coming away very firmly recommending this game) but I will say this; I feel like the ending was missing a little bit of potential. It was good, satisfying narratively, but there were some plot threads that could’ve been tied up a bit more effectively. Besides this, I highly recommend this to kill a few hours. It’s cutesy, fun, and very well written. Hopefully we see the Duck Detective back to complete the trilogy!”
