Island of Winds gameplay footage highlights ‘healing over harming’ magic system
Island of Winds, a narrative adventure game where you trade swords for spellcraft — and use that magic to heal the world rather than harm it — has released a new gameplay trailer.
We previously saw Island of Winds at GDC:
“Here it’s reminiscent of the PS2-style, ‘open corridor’-style, with large barriers like mountains and cliff-edges blocking your passage and steering you between larger areas. It works well, with smaller caves (even those filled with sunlight or puzzles) feeling claustrophobic and focused while wider areas just feel wide enough that you get surprised if something sneaks up on you.
I’m keen to play more of Island of Winds, and am looking forward to its (eventual) release.”
Island of Winds compels with its emphatic twist on adventure
This game is set in a mythical version of 17th century Iceland, with no real fighting to be had — instead there is progression through magic, which is tied to empathy, balance, and a greater understanding of the natural world.
You will play a young Balance Keeper, whose life has been entirely destroyed when their home was attacked and their mentor has vanished. Instead of fighting back with weapons, an ancient magic and your bond with the land has guided you to set out across the broken island to uncover forgotten truths and aid troubled mythical beings, restoring the balance to the world.
Island of Winds’ new footage sheds light on the game’s semi-open environments, environmental puzzles, spellcasting mechanics, and narrative-driven exploration. There are aspects of the story that draw on authentic Icelandic folklore, history, and landscapes. The world looks captivating and the premise is quite a fun one.
Island of Winds is currently expected to launch on PC, via Steam, later this year. Xbox and PlayStation versions are also in development.
