When we heard Aquamarine, a playable comic-book style adventure on an ocean planet, was getting a physical edition our first question was: “Physical edition like an actual comic, or physical edition like a disc?“.
As it turns out, it’s a physical copy of the game alongside a handful of goodies such as the OST CD. The great irony? This physical edition of Aquamarine is planned to release in celebration of a PS5 release of the game…and given how Sony aren’t on best terms with disc copies right now it’s hilarious to see a plucky young indie burst onto the platform and show PlayStation physical is still alive and kicking.
The physical edition launches this Autumn, and promises a treasure trove for returning fans or new players:
- Full physical game. Of course, the edition comes with a physical copy of the game.
- Exclusive Sleeve. Is it 2001? That’s right, we even get an exclusive sleeve for your copy of the game, and if the intricate comic-book-style artwork of the game is anything to go by this one will be a beauty.
- OST CD. Aquamarine is more than just a visual delight, and the OST CD provides a physical copy of all the game’s music. All we’re missing now is a bucket of water and a stinking fish and we’ve got all 5 senses covered!
- Postcard Set. In keeping with the far-from-home theme and hand-drawn style, these postcards will make great collectibles or, frankly, great actual postcards!
A strange new world to explore
In our original first-look at Aquamarine we said “What I loved most about it was my ability to quickly ascend and descend to reach places otherwise inaccessible. Without giving away too much, I would say that Aquamarine isn’t a Subnautica clone — it builds a new world that is both dangerous and gorgeous at once.”
It’s quite clear from the gameplay style and art that Aquamarine was its own thing — with no real reason to warrant a comparison to Subnautica other than the timing of the release and the expectation of hungry fans. Fortunately, now that the Subnautica hype has died down somewhat and the audience have moved on, Aquamarine can exist free from these sorts of needless comparisons.
Actually, the “oddball spin on a roguelite” style of Aquamarine might be more at home in 2026 than ever before, and the turn-based puzzle-esque design will certainly appeal to cosy nights on the sofa with a console game up on the big screen.
