Gunnar Mammoth Onyx Glasses – Bigger Frames, Bigger Style, Bigger Confidence
Gunnar have earned quite a reputation over the last decade, going from niche competitive gaming-style wear to something that’s become more approachable to the average person. The Gunnar Mammoth Glasses feel like the next step in that journey, not least because they take their blue-light blocking and combine it with common frame shapes with extra-wide arms.
Gunnar Glasses are a brand that my editor and his lovely wife recently set me onto after a long period of complaining about headaches following on from long editing and gaming sessions. Rather than me having to spend time on heading to the doctors, they offered to set me up with a pair of the brands’ glasses to wear – and, even though I don’t usually wear glasses – these promised to help with blue-light glasses. Critically for me though, these can be worn without a prescription, are very stylish and come with wider frame options. Gunnar provides lots of different frames and glass types, but for me, these Mammoth frames are spot on.

Firstly, the Mammoth moniker refers to the frame – the frame of the glasses are designed for those with big heads, like myself. They fit comfortably on my face and sit nicely on the bridge of my nose, meaning that even after wearing them for six plus hours, I am showing no fatigue or desire to remove them. They also frame my face quite nicely – lots of my usual friend circle are telling me glasses quite suit me!

The Onyx part of its name refers to the colour of the frame, but there’s another option that can be chosen when picking them up and that’s glass tint – which has been scientifically designed to help blue light exposure. This is one of the biggest contributors to headaches and migraines when you spend long sessions gaming, editing, or simply working at a desktop. Every screen in your life produces blue light and can strain your eyes, leading to fatigue and other symptoms. The tint of these glasses alleviate that, and for me personally, have completely solved my headache problem. I wish the glasses came in a few more colours – simply black and grey and functional, but some more ‘out there’ colours wouldn’t go amiss.. Each pair of glasses comes with a blue light filter rating, telling you the exact percentage of blue light that is blocked, which is important in making sure you find the right tint for you. The lenses are also designed to help reduce things such as dry eye, muscular eye strain, and limit the visual noise you can see, making sure you look after your eyes in a way you may not have thought about before.

Each pair of glasses come with a carry case and cloth to keep those lenses clean and smudge free. Oh, did I mention these glasses are also scratch and glare resistant? Gunnar provides you with a twelve month warranty, so you can rest easy if you accidentally damage them. Need a prescription? Gunnar has a support team ready to find the right set of glasses for you. If, like me, you were a little skeptical about the effect these glasses can have on you, try them out for yourself and I promise you’ll see the difference.
