New Crusader Kings II DLC: Monks and Mystics Announced

Paradox Interactive have announced a new DLC titled Monks and Mystics which will be focused on adding more depth to the religious system with cults, orders and a deeper heresy system.

Crusader Kings II, which launched back in 2012, is an award-winning, grand strategy game initially revolved around the Christian nations of Europe between 1066 and 1453, however the game has received a mass (11, that’s a mass right?) of small expansion packs as well as a flurry of patches over the years that have opened up the Steppes, deeper Africa, and the Indian subcontinent to the game. Players with the right DLC can also start the game from as early as 769. And players with appropriate content can play as any of the leaders of the new regions, regardless of religion, being nomad, or even a trading republic.

Monks and Mystics, then, the twelfth DLC casts a new light onto the darker side of religion during the era by adding in secret cults, Gnostic heresies, the ability to join monastic orders, and all of the various events and chaos that one would hope such things would bring.

I’ll include the current features list shown on the Paradox Blog Post about it below. However, I would like to state beforehand that I am most interested in the new Councillor Actions as well as the mention of assassins — an interesting addition considering Paradox’s divisive decision to remove the game’s assassinate button in the past.

“Monks and Mystics includes:

– Monastic Orders: With lay offices available to non-clerical characters, monastic orders will increase your character’s piety – but they have expectations.

– Cults: Gnostic heresies may flourish and its is rumored that the worship of Satan continues in the darkened fringes of the world

– Climb the Ranks: Characters work their way up the ladder of Societies, unlocking new abilities and triggering new event chains

– Hunt for Heretics: Send your chaplain out to find secret societies that undermine the holy church and your realm. But what if the hunter is guilty himself?

– Other New Councillor Actions: Your councillors have a fourth action that will make them more powerful and integral to sound rulership

– And much more: Assassins, archaeological expeditions, holy relics, great treasures and more”

There is, understandably, no current release window for the DLC, but that’s fine, you should spend this time dusting up on the current features.
