TRUXTON EXTREME – Lots of bullets
I feel like I have played games that were in the same vein or inspired by TRUXTON. TRUXTON EXTREME is the newest instalment in the TRUXTON series, after 38 years of not having a game released in that series.
Despite being a new entry into the series, the game itself does have a lot of nods to the retro feel. I’m not someone who has previously dived into TRUXTON, but I very much enjoyed my time with TRUXTON EXTREME.
TRUXTON EXTREME has you taking down tons of alien ships, using your spaceship at the bottom of the screen to shoot at things coming from the top or swarming from the sides. There are plenty of different enemies to attack, along with lots of upgrades that you can find along the way that can help you.
There are a few different ways to fire; Power Shot, Truxton Beam, Thunder Laser, Homing Shot, Star-mine shot, just to name a few. I spent some time playing around with changing my guns before settling on ones that I liked and wanted to keep for the duration of the game. It’s one of those types of games where these guns feel quite different so you’ll find ones that you just gel with better.
The levels have tons and tons of enemies, like a bullet hell at times, with boss fights sprinkled about to keep things interesting. You don’t have to defeat all of the little enemies that appear, but I often am trying to achieve a higher score by killing everything in sight.
TRUXTON EXTREME does have an over-arching story about your space mission, including a bunch of different characters. If you want, however, you can also play a two-player mode to take on these challenges with a friend, though you won’t be interrupted with bits of story in this mode.
I quite enjoyed my time with TRUXTON EXTREME — it felt intense, nostalgic, but also refreshing and new. It’s such a challenge as well!
TRUXTON EXTREME is set to release on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC on July 30th of this year. You can currently wishlist the game on Steam.
