This That and Everything – Trivia in Categories
Our group does well at trivia style games, as that’s something that can hold our focus during our frequent, but busy, tabletop meet-ups. As we are more casual in what we play, games like this always fit in well. Casual, trivia-based games are often a staple at family gatherings and dinner parties, so we were excited to try out This That and Everything.
This That and Everything is a very easy to play, fast paced trivia game where players are given three decks of cards, set central to the play space, to play from. One is Things, one is Places and one is People. Everyone splits into teams of two (or more, if you want, it’s really casual) and then they are given a score sheet. This score sheet tells you what category cards you are going to be getting each round.
The game starts off slow, giving you one go at each of the decks. Things have things – as you’d expect, like corn dogs, the beach, traffic cones. Places have states, towns, countries and ‘People’ has various famous people. The teams will, one by one, need to choose a card person and a guesser. We rotated these every round for each of our teams. Then the card person reads the card, is ready, and then starts trying to get the guesser to guess the various words on the card. There is a one minute timer, which feels really rather short, to get through the card in. You do not have to go in the order that the card is in, but there is some merit to making it clear if you’ve moved on to the next word!
The timer in This That and Everything does feel extremely fast, especially for the first few rounds. We did find ourselves allowing people to go a bit over, especially on the more challenging category like People. We all really struggled with that, whereas Things felt easier and Places felt just middling.
Some of the rounds actually have other players picking the category that the team currently playing is going to have, which is an interesting twist. Once the score card is completely filled in, everything is tallied up and the game ends. It’s quick, simple, and a whole lot of fun. We can see this being a fantastic family game, especially for family get-togethers.
