Plants vs Zombies Board Game Kickstarter launch date confirmed

0
With successful tabletop-ification of Worms and Halo under their belt (the Worms board game being one of my go-to’s for family game nights) Mantic Games are now turning their hand to the fabled Plants vs Zombies series. We knew the Plants vs Zombies board game was coming, but in an exciting update we can confirm the launch date for the kickstarter campaign. Get your pledge down on October 14th to secure your copy and various extra kickstarter goodies.

The Plants vs Zombies board game is, for sake of clarity, based off of the very first PvZ release. The classic box-screen 480p lane-defence game from the year 2009. Of all the franchises to launch in 2009, surely PvZ holds the most nostalgia and warm memories, and not that film about blue people…

Years later the series has seen spin-offs and re-imaginings, even dabbling (very successfully I might add) with being a third-person hero shooter for a time in Garden Warfare and Garden Warfare 2 (we don’t talk about Battle for Neighbourville). Now, at long last we’re getting a more tangible rendition of the classic formula.

How does the Plants vs Zombies board game work?

Not all board game renditions are faithful to the original game. Many board games feel the need to layer in a competitive element even to games that are purely PvE (or in this case, PvZ). Luckily, Mantic have been smart enough to keep the board game fully solo or co-operative.

Players will play cards to place plants, and have to manage lanes, shuffle zombies and try to make order in the chaos as plants activate, zombies surge forward and the day turns to night…

The game revolves around a “Zen Garden” campaign mode that unlocks new plants, tools and zombies to face as you play, but Mantic have also hinted that these “Scenarios” could be played as one-off games as well.

Plants vs Zombies board game kickstarter rewards

Now that we have a launch date confirmed, it’d be nice to know exactly what your pledge gets you. Unfortunately we cannot confirm all of the stretch goal rewards as these are unveiled throughout the kickstarter campaign, however there are some bonuses that you can guarantee via certain types of pledge:

  • Follow bonus: a Zombie-coloured Chaos dice for use in the final game
  • Deluxe edition pledge: Includes the 3D pre-assembled miniatures featured in the key art
  • Night edition pledge: A standalone expansion which comes complete with its cards, miniatures and rules

You can follow the campaign even before it starts to snag yourself the die, and then when the campaign launches on October 14th you can choose your pledge.
