Medieval RTS Bannermen Detailed, and Shown Off in New Trailer

Extensive single player campaign, eight-player multiplayer, and dynamic maps included in upcoming RTS.

Earlier in the week the Square Enix Collective published on their site the latest game to join the initiative: Bannermen.

Bannermen, from Pathos Interactive, takes place on a war-torn continent inspired by the medieval period of Northern and Western period. The team have stated that the game is semi-fantasy, although don’t go into depth on whether this means there’s any fay or supernatural elements within.

The game plays out like traditional collect-and-build real-time strategy titles, with players gathering resources they then use to build buildings, allowing for the training of units or defense of their base. Unlike most of the traditional entries into the genre, elements of the map can change as the battle goes on, ice forming over rivers, avalanches tearing open the ground, and more.

Fire is shown spreading through trees which is a valuable resource in games of the sort, and one GIF on the Bannermen page actually shows a soldier triggering a group of rocks to fall down a hill onto rival units.

Everything about Bannermen looks well made, although the main issue it will probably face is in the visual similarities it shares with other medieval/pre-renaissance set games like Age of Empires III, Northgard, and Stronghold.

The dynamic map events, interior maps, and eight-player multiplayer are all solid components of the pitch however, and, let’s face it, with RTS titles suddenly seeing a resurgence it could do very, very well. I’ve a soft spot for it because most of my matches in AOE II reach a head in the age of castles.
