Gunnar Monterey – California Sun

A site for sore eyes

The Gunnar Glasses Monterey’s offer lightweight eye protection for the computer facing worker or gamer.

As an avid gamer, I find myself looking at screens an awful lot, and as a mathematics teacher I tend to look at them even more at work, analysing data. Shockingly I find my eyes pretty tired and sore by the time I reach the sweet escape of sleep, and this is often because of all that blue light from screens that we hear so much about these days.

Thankfully, there’s a nice solution with Gunnar Glasses, and I’ve been using the Monterey set recently and have found myself sleeping better and that my eyes feel less uncomfortable after an extended period of screen time. I could argue that it’s a placebo effect, but from reading up on what Gunnar Glasses actually do, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Please excuse that unshaven monstrosity.

These glasses are specifically designed to reduce eye strain thanks to tints that block out blue light and minimise glare that can be damaging to eyes. They also purport to trap more moist air around your eyes, decreasing the likelihood of dryness. I can’t say I really thought about it, but supposedly you blink a lot less when intensely staring at a screen, leading to that dryness, so it’s a nice thought to protect your eyesight more. Whilst I don’t need them, Gunnar do offer prescription lenses with their frames too if you know exactly what you need, but obviously these cost more.

I’ve been using the Monterey set, which seems to be doing some good for my eyes. I will say that I think this set is a little too big for my face — which is an odd sentence now that I read it back — but there’s a huge range of frames available, so I would think the discerning shopper should be able to find ones that they like. If I could get away with them, I’d absolutely wear the Borderlands Moxxi pair. They came with a little pouch and a lovely flat packing glasses case that folds out when you need to put them away.

I really quite like the little fold away case.

The only downside is the cost, as I feel these are quite expensive. Not needing glasses myself, I can’t really speak to the cost of frames these days, but coming in at £125 or so is quite a price tag. Then again, how much is my eyesight worth? Beyond that, it’s really hard to complain too much about these glasses. They’re comfortable and lightweight enough, and seem to be doing me some good, so I’m fairly happy with them. If you’re in the market for a stylish set of glasses and you use screens an awful lot, you could do a lot worse than pick up a set of Gunnar Monterey’s.

Gunnar Monterey and a large range of other frames are available from Gunnar’s website.
