Clouzy! is adorable but cumbersome

When I see a cute game appear, I want to pick it up and play it. Add in the fact that it’s an open world, slice of life styled game, and you’ve got me hooked. So, when I saw Clouzy!, I was excited to live in a world where I can take care of cloud-cat hybrid creatures and bumble around the town, looking for things to collect.

Amelia and Robin, ages 11 and six, were also both interested in Clouzy!, mostly due to the combination of cats and cute graphics, so there was a lot of interest in the game at home. You start the game off with your cloud cat, and you need to help other clouds who come to you. There is a little play area, kind of like a children’s kindergarten, where you can see the clouds that you need to help. The area has a little monitor that says what’s wrong with them.

The first cloud we got was dirty and angry. It seemed like we needed to make him a calming food, that would reduce anger. There are a few different food types, but at the start, you can only make one, as the machine to make food does not have enough slots to actually cook with it.

This first issue is kind of recurring in the game. There are so many machines and points of the game where we just don’t know how to unlock or progress. Reading the tutorial didn’t help. I spent ages trying to forage and find an item that looked like sugar cubes, just to find out that I had a gift inside my mailbox that made sugar cubes. I found this out by directly contacting the devs. Once I knew how to make sugar cubes, I then realized I didn’t have enough slots in the cooking machine to cook them into anything that I needed, because it’s just locked.

The world inside Clouzy! is adorable, full of stuff to collect. However, your inventory and storage chest is small, so you can’t actually hold much at all. There are various different puzzles hidden around, including puzzles with lanterns, that are super subtle and take a while to notice. Robin and I spent some time solving these, to unlock chests full of more items to carry. Sometimes items are wearables for your character while others seem to be toys that specific clouds will want in the future, if we ever unlock them.

Some areas of the map areas are sort of gated and off-limits; there is an entire desert that if you start to walk through it, you will get too hot and pass out. None of us can, at the moment, figure out what we need to do to get through that place, but I am sure that there is more of the map to explore.

We’ve put several hours in Clouzy! over the last few months, but honestly have not actually been able to help a cloud or really figure out what is going on. Though we were able to explore and forage for items, after a while it just felt like we couldn’t progress and there was nothing that we can do to really go forward. I almost wish I could find some guides or tutorials on what to do, as we are so lost, but the game itself is really, really cute. The concept of Clouzy! is also really fun, if only we could figure out what to do.

Clouzy! can be found on Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC.
