Avalanche Software Revived as Warner Bros Studio… To Work on Projects for Former Owner
Avalanche Software return to development under Warner Bros Games 7 months after studio closure by Disney.
Let it never be said that the gaming industry is an easy one to predict, all sorts of ludicrous things happen within it’s wide halls; however this is the first time (while B3 has been around at least) that a developer has returned to life after 7 months away from the land of the living.
When Avalanche Software was closed by Disney following them pulling out of the Toys to Life market last May a company with 20 years of development history that covered five consoles generations was tucked away into the cupboards, and the staff scattered to the winds like ashes.
As it turns out though, this was not quite the case. A press release today detailed that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment would be taking on development (and publishing) duties of a Cars 3 tie-in video game, with the development to be performed by Avalanche Software using their own engine, Octane.
While Disney certainly made it clear over the last few years that they are happy to license out their properties, with Disney Infinity they also marked their exit from their own development efforts.
It makes sense then, that with no DI the company would start licensing out tie-in opportunities for future releases, and this is quite a way to start. Especially since some would paint Warner Bros and Disney as media rivals.
While there were no details on change of location or staffing numbers, it’s certainly good news for Avalanche.
