Atom Keychain Controller – Cute but missing something

I am a huge fan of things cute and tiny! The Atom Keychain Controller is a very tiny, usable controller that you can easily take with you wherever you go. It very much reminds me of a little fidget toy, but this one can actually connect via Bluetooth to your mobile device or Nintendo Switch so you can play on the go.

The Atom Keychain Controller has a bit of a strange setup, but one inspired by early, classics, with there being a D-Pad at one side, and then the X, Y, B, and A buttons on the other side. There is a Bluetooth connection button, as well as plus and minus buttons. The top of the controller has a right trigger, RZ trigger, left trigger and ZL trigger. So there are a lot of buttons on this little controller.

My real issue with the keychain is that there is no thumbstick. The controller connects as an Xbox Controller, which means that a lot of the games I then tried to play with it were looking for a thumbstick controller. I found it really difficult to actually find a game that I play that would be useful for this controller. We tried a bunch of Apple Arcade games, along with some games with in-game controllers (visually) that could be moved. I found that there were inputs being recognised, especially on menus, but as the controller is missing the thumbstick, I couldn’t find a use for it. Perhaps this is something for retro games and emulators, however most of those won’t use the included shoulder buttons.

But, I don’t think the Atom Keychain Controller is a controller that people would be using constantly for mobile gaming or as a new controller for your Nintendo Switch. I think that this controller is an affordable gift or cool product that is ideal for the gamer that has everything. I did connect it without any sort of issues and found that charging the device is pretty easy, it comes with a USB to USB-C charging cable that can be used everywhere. The Atom also has a strap, although I would likely change it out for a keychain, allowing you to hold onto it! It’s impressive to have such a tiny controller, and at this price point, I do see why people would enjoy the novelty of it all.

I’d love this for playing Animal Crossing in the car, as my Switch gets a bit heavy after playing for a while. Hopefully it would work ok, but if not it would still be a fun item to add to my gaming display cabinet.
