The Fortress reveals new update, roadmap and future free expansion

0

The Fortress is a gritty, class-based roguelite crawler, full of challenge, turn-based strategy, and many risks. After it’s release on Steam earlier this year, The Fortress has continued to have updates that add more content and game mechanics. Recently, they’ve published a major update, this month, called the Companions Update, along with a roadmap for future development.

We previously reviewed the game:

“I have high hopes for The Fortress, which I didn’t expect I’d say after finishing my first run. However, seeing the dev respond to feedback and actively introspect on the nature of luck-based gameplay gives me hope. It would be easy to yell that the players are the problem and luck is fun, citing any number of examples like Darkest Dungeon or X-Com, but that argument would fail to recognise the core mechanics of those games allow for redemption, off-setting failures and the ability to increase or reduce risk through player choice. Baryonyx Games are clearly on-the-ball when it comes to listening to feedback, and so long as those fixes are implemented correctly (so that means no more visible <color = “red”> code in text boxes…) I can see The Fortress being a hit in the genre.”

The Fortress proves that luck-based games still need agency

The Companions Update brings six new, unique companions that you can new encounter on your journey. Each of these companions offers powerful bonuses and can completely change the way that you are approaching your runs, challenging new strategies and opportunities for survival. You can recruit them to help you on your journey for survival.

Next for The Fortress, this June, players can look forward to the Gamblin’s n Goblins expansion, which will introduce a Luck stat and a new area called the Goblin Realm, along with new enemies and items.

It’s clear that they are working hard to follow their roadmap and continue to expand the game.
