Bun Buns is a simple, physics-based merge game
I feel like I have seen a few of these different merge games, with the first one being a sort of fruit-bowl merge with lots of fruit going in. It’s not surprising the concept has been turned into different skins, with Bun Buns being a more cute, cozy looking merge game using a bunch of little pastries, all with a cute bunny face. The pastries start off small; a little donut bite, but can be merged into bigger and bigger items like bread or a handful of little buns.
Bun Buns isn’t a stand out game in that it works just like all of these other types of games; you have two different backgrounds to choose from, along with the choice of single player or local two player. You can change your character too, spending coins to decorate your avatar. If you are playing two player, it’s quite important to know exactly who you are!
Then, you can drop the different items you have into your bowl, one at a time, making sure to not hit the top of your bowl. There are rocks that come and fall into your bowl, which doesn’t fully seem to fit the theme for me (I wish they were vegetables!). To get rid of these, you need to either combine pastries nearby the rock or get a power-up to remove it. There are a number of power-ups in Bun Buns from milk that makes the thing you are dropping go to the bottom of the bowl, to candy that explodes the bowl, to a chocolate heart that instantly moves up the pastry to the next version of it.
As you combine the different pastries in Bun Buns, you do get a score and coins to unlock more avatar items. Robin, our youngest, quite liked playing the game in two-player co-op, though things do get a little chaotic quite quickly. Bun Buns is ultimately a simple, quick merge game that might do better on mobile devices, but it will keep younger kids occupied for small amounts of time too, which sometimes is exactly what you need on your living room TV. And, if they really like it, Bun Buns has a few DLCs to unlock more items and maps.
You can find Bun Buns on Xbox.
