Remnants of Yore – An Early Look at PGC

0
Remnants of Yore is a cosy combination of running a store and roguelite action as you build up your stock, complete quests and cruise around town helping anyone and everyone on your adventure.

Remnants of Yore was exhibited at Pocket Gamer Connects London with a booth for all to come and get their hands on, alongside some interesting cards depicting some of the team behind the game.

You can find yourself controlling one of multiple characters to run your store and fight enemies. The idea is that you will need  to find new stock and herb combinations to get stronger as you venture deeper into the wilderness and discover more powerful upgrades and treasure to sell at your store back in town.

The team at the Remnants of Yore booth described it as Roguelite with “Hades and Stardew Valley mixed together” although I myself could see a clear connection to something like Cult of the Lamb with a similar gameplay loop but with a much more open world. With a system in place when doing the fighting sections that allow you to find and combine herbs to unlock unique abilities per run.

There are big plans for Remnants of Yore already, with a “fishing mini game” in the works but not currently implemented as well as work on relationships and quests to keep you helping the town and getting as involved as you can with the residents as you try and figure out the origins of a strange affliction affecting the town/

Throughout Remnants of Yore its cosy charm does leave you wanting to just cruise around as a cat on a magical book just drinking it all in. One key distinction The team mentioned was that “Remnants of Yore has very forgiving mechanics aimed towards a more casual audience.” Meaning that this is not going to be a dark souls esque level of difficulty when you are doing your runs for materials making it much more accessible to everyone.

It was originally kickstarted, with moderate success and has a keen following on Discord with competitions and streams showing off regular updates as well as giving people a chance to win a full key for when the game is released.

It’s absolutely filled with cosy charm and atmosphere with a lot of promise and a lot of bright ideas to not only draw players in but keep them there entertained and involved in many different ways, it truly looks like there is something for everyone.

If you’d like to take a peek into the world of Remnants of Yore for yourself you can find the demo now on Steam.
