Ground of Aces is already a promising military base management experience
Early in development, but still very good!
As with any pre-, pre- preview of a new game, these are only the (very) first impressions… of both the game and the mechanics implemented so far. At the time of writing, Ground of Aces was only released into Steam Early Access a few days ago!
After three days in, it’s already so familiar, yet so different, from other games. It is, perhaps surprisingly, very easy to pick up and go — a far cry from the sort of titles that I normally cover here. Ground of Aces is extremely accessible… plus, more importantly than anything else, it’s fun!
If you’ve ever read anything that I’ve written for B3, then you will know that I’m pretty damn picky about my gaming tastes. Ground of Aces is both a base and city builder, while also being a wargame. As such, it’s right up my alley. What I would say is that I normally struggle with real-time games, preferring to labor over my next move, however I can deal with it being RTS due to the smoothness of both learning and playing. That’s something that I really didn’t expect to be saying for something that’s barely off of the drawing table.
When you start a new wargame, and the opponent gets to go first, that’s a pretty good sign you’re going to be playing make-up (rouge, mascara, whatever) for the rest of the scenario. You can only watch as their planes fly over with bombing and strafing attacks on your equipment and buildings.
After that deluge, it’s your turn, Sparky (or Bob, Oliver, Howard, etc.)… what are you going to do to counter that?
First thing you have to do is to rebuild — everything.
Initially, what you’re trying to do is to rebuild as quickly as possible. You’re looking for a way to 1. defend your properties 2. Keep your personnel satiated, healthy, and happy. 3. and maybe eek out some form of retaliation.
Ground of Aces plays very smoothly… no stutters, no crashes. For, as complex as it could be, the controls and symbols are extremely intuitive. One of the parts that I like the best is that you can turn it up 12X! — rather than waiting on a bunch of items to be gathered, and especially, waiting on some rather large (at times) structures being built.
Then… well, you’ll have to figure the next parts out. It’s not difficult, just takes some poking around in the menus.
I’m extremely excited for this game to release. Yes, I know it’ll be a while, but I already feel it’ll be worth the wait.
Ground of Aces is available now for PC.
