Paradox Interactive Acquires Triumph Studios; Developers of Age of Wonders, Overlord
Paradox Interactive acquires Triumph Studios
Triumph Studios, creators of the Age of Wonders, and Overlord, series have been acquired by Paradox Interactive, a publisher best known for their internal grand strategy titles.
Paradox Interactive have been in a golden-age of sorts since they launched Crusader Kings II back in 2012. Since then their publishing efforts have include Cities Skyline, Pillars of Eternity, and the mobile version of Prison Architect among others. Internal sequels to long running series such as Hearts of Iron, and Europa Universalis have sold well under new business models. Last year their officially listed themselves with an IPO, which shortly predated their shift to move their publishing efforts to consoles. In addition to Triumph Studios, the publisher acquired P&P mainstay Whitewolf.
Triumph Studios acquisition is an unexpected one, Age of Wonders has been selling very well over the last while and the third title has continued to receive expansions. Personally I’m unsure as to the current state of the Overlord IP, as Codemasters were (at least in the UK) the publishers and distributors for the title when they launched on consoles.
What is certain however is that the acquisition is a peaceful one; founders Lennart Sas and Arno van Wingerden are still with the company alongside the rest of the management and development teams. As a matter of fact, the press release stated clearly that “All ongoing projects will remain in development, and will be published by Paradox Interactive.”
There will be a live streamed discussion -regarding the acquisition- between Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester and Triumph CEO Lennart Sas on Friday 30 June at 4PM CEST. It will be live over on twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive.
