Cats and dogs are such a popular, well-loved pet that having a board game full of cute cats and dogs, does feel like it would fit in well with most homes. You Gotta Be Kitten Me is a card game where you must guess how many accessories or colors there are between all player hands.
Now, that may sound confusing, but it really isn’t. Each player gets a few dog and cat tokens that sit in front of them, which actually define how many cards they get in their hands. These tokens are equal at the start of the game, but over time you can lose your tokens by not guessing correctly.
Once everyone has had a look at their hand, the last person who petted a cat gets to go first. That person needs to guess how many of a specific thing there would be around the table. This can be guessing there are five pairs of glasses or ten green accessories for example. The cards themselves have accessories in three colors on them, which is what you will be guessing. The next person around the table then needs to pick a higher number to say, but can change what they are predicting.
This continues around the table until whoever goes next either says “purrrfect”, agreeing with the last said statement (which risks their own token) or You Gotta Be Kitten Me, which is said when they feel the number is too high, risking the person who just bid’s token. At that point, all of the cards are then revealed around the table and players will start counting whatever the last guess is. This means that if you are looking for ten glasses, you will be counting to see if there are ten. You will need to have the exact number when saying Purrfect, or equal or higher for a call out, for a player to keep their token, but most of the time that’s basically impossible, so people are just losing cards.
The real mistake we all made when playing You Gotta Be Kitten Me is starting with big numbers. Our player group started guessing really big numbers, even as the first person starts, which is quite a challenge for the next player to guess more, especially as the game goes on and people lose tokens so have less cards in play. These cards can have a bunch of accessories per card while others have only one or two, which brings a lot of variety into the game.
You gotta Be Kitten Me is a simple to learn, cute card game that works well for an animal lover! Though the gameplay itself isn’t complex enough for this card game to stay on our shelves for long and we feel with children the game would be quite unsatisfying if their siblings pick big numbers.
