A road-trip throughout the US-of-A should never be more than a hoot and a holler away, right? Well, in The Electric State’s alternative timeline — where VR really, REALLY took off — the ‘American War Machine’ has turned in on itself. The Electric State’s setting has both Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana as all the rage, but America divided by several terrible civil wars while the states remapped the nation as we know it.
Players take on the role of travellers — Criminals, Scientists, Misfits and Oddballs — as they set out on an adventure to, well, simply achieve something in this wasteland. From a GM/DM perspective, The Electric State is scene-based and features two main stats: Health and Hope, which are restored through rest and player-led drama. Character sheets are dominated by four attributes and a series of perks, however most of the play is GM and conversation led, making for an almost ‘solution-driven’, OSR-style of play. Mechanically it uses a modified Year Zero engine, although it’s stripped down to requiring only 10, six-sided dice for play.
The Electric State Core RPG Rulebook includes all the rules you’ll need to create characters and run a game, while also including an example journey involving murder, mystery and a sentient AI made real.

This is a game about a group of travelers heading out on a journey through a strange America in an alternate 1997. The ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside, heaped together with the discarded trash of a high tech consumerist society in decline.
The game is not about the goal but the journey – what the characters experience along the way and how it changes them. This is a game of exploration, of finding out who you are, who your friends are, and what you are willing to do when the world collapses around you.“
