More Details on UnDungeon Revealed In Story & Gameplay Update

Journey as melted ruin of dimensions as a Herald, one of seven who can change and define the fate of the worlds.

UnDungeon developer, Laughing Machines, has posted an update to their IndieDB page; the update pertains mostly to the story, gameplay of the upcoming RPG.

The Seven Playable Heralds

In UnDungeon you’ll explore a network of procedurally generated worlds, each ripped, and crippled, by the sudden merging of a mass of conflicting dimensions; throwing each into chaos.

At the beginning of your journey you select which of the seven newly awoken heralds you will play as, after that you’re thrust into the newly melded worlds as to explore, investigate, and judge the population.

The game utilises a form of permadeath, with players only having a single attempt at each generation of the world if you are defeated then any chance to fix or judge that world will be crushed; fight on however, and embed yourself into the minds of those you meet, and you’ll get to play a critical part in the direction and fate of each of the planets you do manage to overcome.

Due to the way the game world is generated, and how the various locations slot together like puzzle-pieces the developer cites that each attempt will lead to a new ending; while there’s no estimate on the diversity of the endings, if there’s enough parts to be combined then the amount of variations could certainly be an impressive number.

Combat is, understandably, rather critical to the game, although there is a major focus on dialogue because of the nature of your role as a herald of change. What is nice to see though is the diversity of combat; in the trailer below you can see Dharma slinging balls of light against demonic darkness entities, while Tripos fights off robots.

We also see some of the smaller walking pods attacking what looks like the second character in the Heralds image above, but there’s also humanoids launching bullets and explosives.

Apparently the average playthrough will weigh in at a digestible 2-3 hour length, however there’s said to be enough event diversity that the game should retain a decent amount of re-playability – that and the fact that there are 7 different heralds to play as.

The team behind UnDungeon are currently preparing for a Kickstarter campaign, and have plans to release the game for PC in 2017.
