New Expansion ‘Homeworlds’ Shakes Up the Star Wars Unlimited Meta With New Mechanics

0

Star Wars Unlimited releases its 9th mainline set, Homeworlds, today, on the 9th of October. It features 260 new cards, the new fortify keyword, two new token cards, a new style for prestiges and much much more as well as marking the games’ third year.

With the focus on the units of Homeworlds being the planets, creatures and invading armies from all walks of life there’s a varied roster of cards in the 260 that are released which feature a focus on certain traits such as Gungan, Wookie, Ewok, Imperial and beasts each with their own respective abilities and cards and a new focus on the trait of your base for the first time with cards featuring conditions based on where it is located.

If you were lucky enough to attend one of the pre-release events at your local game store you would also have been able to snag a special hyperspace version of the two new spotlight leaders for your collection otherwise will have to find them in the spotlight decks.

Star Wars Unlimited – Getting hands on early with Homeworlds

As with all new releases with Unlimited, Homeworlds has two new spotlight decks, Chewbacca and Grand Moff Tarkin. Both of these perfectly highlight some of the new mechanics in play with Tarkin allowing players to play the new fortify upgrades to stack up bonus effects and abilities on your base to either support your units or have interesting interactions with enemies. Chewbacca takes a different approach with his leader ability allowing you to attack with a unit a second time (but not to bases) allowing for some hyper efficient trades for the low cost of two resources.

The two new tokens that are available in Homeworlds either weakens the enemy (or your own units if you so choose to do that) with -1/-1 upgrades that can be handed out to level the playing field both in space and on the ground, this primarily seems to with the new Doctor Hemlock leader but if you match the mainly blue aspects for it can be utilised anywhere.

Otherwise the new 3/3 beast tokens allows you to add some meat to your board presence and with plenty of new creature/beast synergy available and seems to appeal to those who play both premier and eternal with leader both new and old being able to take advantage of the new token.

Following Ashes of the Empire Homeworlds is the largest set release to date and with Icons being on the horizon for November it’s sure to be a jam-packed end to the year.
