The Last Gas Station Powerswitcher update launches, and coop is coming
The Last Gas Station released in April 2026 with a beautifully rendered world that was frustrating to actually play and engage with. Since then, the team at Alawar have been hard at work with progression overhauls, bug fixes and the like. The most recent update is a big one, marking a change to the endgame and, importantly, the camera controls while decorating. The Last Gas Station Powerswitcher update is out now for free to owners of the game.
In our original review, we were frustrated with that such a beautiful and intriguing game didn’t deliver the Quality of Life a management game needs, saying that “Managing shop inventory is abysmal. You can’t specify storage locations, and can’t see price data when storing or placing items. Again, the idea you could buy a load of stock up when it’s cheap and sell it off when it spikes is Management Game 101, but The Last Gas Station doesn’t have the infrastructure to let you do that.”
The consistent and player-first updates since launch have gone a long way to making The Last Gas Station much closer to the original experience we wanted, and the Powerswitcher update is no exception.
Beautiful art and dynamic music aren’t enough to save The Last Gas Station
Powerswitcher spices up the management gameplay by giving players choice
One of the biggest flaws with The Last Gas Station was the lack of player choice. There was one objectively best way to play, which in a management game just felt at odds with the entire vibe. The Powerswitcher update reignites player agency in the late-game by making sure players have daily choices to make. Namely: which devices and upgrades they keep powered for that day and which they turn off.
When you’ve gotten to the higher levels of power consumption and automation, instead of the game plateauing it now provides a new level of management. By forcing players to balance power consumption and energy costs, you can actually diversify where you save money and how you make it. That sort of economical decision-making was entirely absent from The Last Gas Station’s endgame until now, and will help keep players engaged in the last stages of the game.
Quality of life when decorating and editing
As well as the new Powerswitcher content, the update also brings a variety of quality of life changes. For starters, camera controls when editing your furniture and moving items are far more intuitive, allowing you to use LMB as well as WASD to move the camera even when holding a shelf or aquarium. Shelves are also locked in place if the assistant is restocking them, which prevents pathing and storage bugs.
There’s a host of smaller balance changes such as changing the value of certain fish and the Legends progress of certain decorations, but on a moment-to-moment level the changes to power consumption and shelving are going to affect players the most.
The Last Gas Station Coop is available via Discord
Finally, looking ahead to the future Alawar has begun working on a Coop update for the game. Currently this build is highly experimental and closed to Discord members, so if you’re eager to get running The Last Gas Station with a friend then join the official Discord for updates.
