I’ve already covered some of the great legendary creatures that can lead your decks from the new Hobbit set, but I would be remiss to ignore some of the excellent drops that have come out for the 99 too!

So, here are my top five picks for you to consider putting into the meat of your commander decks, straight from the newest set release.
The Queen of Dale
Now I nearly made her one of my commander picks, but I think she works far too well as a synergy piece for a Bard deck instead. In any pod of four players, I can almost guarantee the fact someone will be playing a spellslinger deck. Even if they aren’t, counterspells and interaction are a prominent feature of pretty much any deck in the format, so you’ll be getting triggers left, right and center, all of which will also trigger Bard’s doubling effect in most situations.
Elven Raft-Steerer
Elves love to tap for things, often mana. They’re also primarily a green archetype (sorry Golgari), so I’d be dropping this in a green-blue deck at a minimum, but combine this with some ramp spells and some decent sequencing, and you’ll be getting a huge amount of value from the elves you tap in no time at all!
Great Ugly-Looking Goblin
Rude name aside, GULG is an excellent inclusion in a variety of decks. Like I said in my previous article, menace is seriously underrated, and nowadays it’s very easy to start dropping +1/+1 counters on creatures (especially with the convenient Amass effect on the adventure side of the card). In no time at all you’ll be slipping attacks through the cracks that you just couldn’t manage before.
Getaway Barrel
13 cards is a lot of cards. That’s well over 10% of your deck. Yes, 12 of those are going to end up on the bottom of your library, but if you have some high CMC creatures in your deck, this could be a really effective way to cheat them out, you just have to destroy it first.
Dancing from Dark to Dawn
I don’t know who bribed WotC when they were designing this set, but as a “big stompy” player I am grateful. I don’t think I need to explain to you why this card is good, so I’m just going to let you read it and then we can take a moment to appreciate my new best friend. ….Okay, I’m going to go find my Craterhoof, see ya.
