11-11: Memories Retold hands on — two sides of the same war
11-11: Memories Retold takes you on a beautiful, story-driven adventure between two very different people, both fighting on different sides of World War One.
In the stunning, brush-stroked world of 11-11: Memories Retold, you start off playing Harry, a young man who works at a camera store in Canada. Harry has a massive crush on one of the women who work there, however she only sees him as a friend.
Despite loving your job and the girl you work with, you have decided to enlist in the army as a photographer. You were always good at taking photos, and you were told that women love a man in uniform. Plus, taking photos isn’t like holding a gun or being a real part of the war… right?
As it turns out, you are brought into the line of fire, taking pictures of the sergeants leading their troops into battle. You must follow your captain, taking the photos he wants you to take, while watching people around you die to gunfire. Avoid the bullets yourself and try to stay alive so you can someday make it home.
On the other side of the globe you have Kurt, a father who has spent most of his life working. His son had enlisted in the war, however their troop has gone missing. Unsure of what to do to find his son, and unable to do anything while at home, Kurt enlisted in the war as well. Now he’s also on the front lines, keeping a lookout for a way to find his son.
11-11: Memories Retold switches between these two characters without your control, giving you tasks as each one, just across the field. You can nearly see the previous character as you load guns and fight on. Neither of these characters are in the war for the battle — both have their own stories yet share a very similar life.
Playing as both Kurt and Harry in the demo I was shown had neither of the two directly firing guns within the war. Instead, Kurt runs water and does small side jobs and Harry has his camera — focused on taking pictures. Not directly shooting and aiming guns keeps the focus on the story — the memories both of these two characters have.
11-11 Memories Retold comes out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 9th, 2018. You can find more info on Bandai Namco’s website.
