Superpower Racing Gave Me Classroom Nostalgia
While at Brilliant Indie Treasures earlier in the year, Superpower Racing immediately caught my attention, and it wasn’t just me, as there was a small group of people around already actively trying to improve on a best time set by the developer. The physics of the driving triggered something in me, and before I knew it I was sitting with a controller in my hand.
Superpower Racing is, at its simplest, a small arcade racer with unique physics, but it is so much more than that. There’s already an established career mode, a Timebomb mode (essentially a checkpoint race with a bomb attached to your car), a Hot Lap mode for racing against the clock, and a.. Zombies mode???
I gave the arcade mode a shot and found that controlling these vehicles was a lot harder than the previous playgroup had made it seem. There was an ebb and flow to maintaining the momentum the cars built up, having to use a combination of clever drifting, shortcuts and braking to keep each corner flowing into the next. There are several vehicles available for unlocking, each with their own unique stats and be fully customised.

After a few tries, I found myself getting a hang of the controls. I explained to the developer that it was putting me in the mind of the old Flash games you used to play as a kid when you had computer time in school. I remember these old Flash racers that we used to set times on and you’d all send the link to each other, trying to get one another to beat your best times. This is, to me, exactly like that, and I asked about aspects of multiplayer. The dev told me he’d considered it, as there are already leaderboards for the Hot Lap modes, but it wasn’t a high priority right now.

With Superpower Racing in Early Access and already available, if you’ve got some pocket change spare, I highly recommend this one. It’s a lot of fun and you’ll find yourself wanting to perfect each and every lap; which can only be a good thing!
Superpower Racing is currently in Early Access on PC, and is due to move to its full release in 2027.
