London Games Fest is back in town, and with it comes New Game Plus. While attending GodsTV caught my eye with its 90s synthwave style and larger than life characters – so I couldn’t turn up an opportunity to sit down and give it a go.
GodsTV is set in a future where gods have decided to make their very own game show – and fame is your currency and power to win. Styled as a roguelike RPG, each run is an episode of this sick and twisted show. On showcase today for me were two of the four currently planned playable characters, Kinni and Pepperish, were available for me to try. Both boasted different powers and abilities, with Kinni being strong and slow and Pepperish being his polar opposite. I decided to go with Kinni. He’s a wrestler with a paper bag on his face and wearing only a leather jacket and a jock strap. And oh yes, there’s jiggle physics. It’s glorious.
Before heading out, I was encouraged to go and talk to my AI-Gent , where to speak, I stuck my head through a butthole in the wall. This game is very funny and it’s not even trying to be; but it wears its comedy on its sleeve and I can fully appreciate that. So onto the episode we go, and I quickly learn the controls. I was playing on keyboard and mouse, but this is definitely a game that benefits from controller input. I should point out that that option is available and fully supported, I’m just very stubborn.
At the end of each level, you’re awarded a little power-up from one of the spectating gods to help you on your run, and it has a very frustrating quality where the power-ups are all so good, it almost makes you feel like in the moment, you have selected the wrong one just a level or so later. With a charming artstyle and an addictive gameplay loop, GodsTV with absolutely keep you replaying every episode over and over again to get the win. Go wishlist it now!
