Star Wars Unlimited – A Lawless Time Preview

Disney’s relatively new Star Wars: Unlimited TCG may have flown under the radar for some, as It certainly had for me, but I was delighted to have a chance to learn and play with the new A Lawless Time cards and build a deck to play against some of the scenes more veteran players at Disney HQ and preview the new set.

A Lawless Time is the 8th new set in the TCG and features a large focus on bounty hunters and the new credit token allowing you a temporary resource to bring out some of your big hitters that little bit earlier.

Star Wars: Unlimited is designed to have an appeal to both collectors and players offering a wide array of cards with abilities to mix and match to create the perfect deck but at the same time offers lots of different collectable variants such as carbonite packs or legendary characters such as the new Max Rebo card, everyone’s favourite Mos Eisley Cantina musician.

One of the first things that caught my eye with the Star Wars: Unlimited cards is the art style. I’m a bit of a Star Wars fan but there’s something about ripping a few packs open to see the faces of those on-screen heroes in your hands that not only hits you with nostalgia but gets you thinking what kind of synergy can I pull off with this one?

I opted to make a villain deck with my leader being the one and only Darth Vader. With his ability of doing one damage for discarding a card letting you ping enemies cards and base, it gives you a lot more flexibility on the field and allows for some sneaky eliminations if you were just under the damage required to wipe out a card.

The new release also marks the first rotation of older cards from legal play, with the first three sets now no longer being able to be used in legal play however a new style similar to Hearthstone’s Wild play will be available that will let you use any card from any set allowing for a much more open approach to deck building.

We were invited to a preview event, ahead of launch, by publishers Asmodee. It was an entirely serious event.

There is also a thriving culture of players getting involved in Star Wars: Unlimited with weekly tournaments being held locally in towns and cities and much larger events being held in places like Las Vegas that you can qualify in just by playing at one of your local tournaments.

You can find the new A Lawless Time packs on the 13th of March as well as plenty of other Star Wars Unlimited products in most high street card shops as well as information on stores, how to play and where to compete in weekly play on the Star Wars: Unlimited website.
