Gaming in Review | June 2016

The gaming industry remains one of the fastest evolving industries in the world, one that constantly adapts, and one that is increasingly expanding its reach and grasp on the citizens of the world’s free time. As such, there’s rarely a month go by which can be called a bad month in the industry, especially not when we look at it as players rather than puppet-masters and suits.

To wave out the old, and welcome in the new we’ll be going through some of the defining factors of each of the months of the year. We’ll be listing some of the games that launched, discussing some of the events that happened, and discussing some of the implications that they had throughout the year, or might have going into the next.

So, without further ado,

June 2016

Right, as we all know, E3 completely dominates the month of June. That said, there were still some solid releases, even if the news front was dominated with announcements and gameplay trailers.

You can find our -foolish- attempt at compiling as many E3 Trailers into one, poorly-formatted post [here]

  • The biggest, non-E3, story of the month was when a Ford dealership, Quirk Auto Dealers, re-purposed artwork from Firewatch into an advert within an e-mail flyer. (Game Informer)

  • As for E3: Pokemon Go received a launch window; the Xbox One S was confirmed as a console revision that would upscale graphics, with the Scorpio to launch in 2017; Sony didn’t showcase the ‘Neo,’ instead doing so later in the year before launching it as the PS4 Pro near the end of the year.

  • EA announced a new publishing wing titled ‘Originals’, and their first partnered title called Fe; they also confirmed extra details on Battlefield 1, Fifa & Madden. Mass Effect Andromedia received a promotional trailer, and there was also a montage showcasing the depths that the publisher is intending to push the Star Wars license.

  • Bethesda unveiled Prey 2 and Quake Champions, as well as VR demos for Doom & Fallout 4. Dishonored 2 and Skyrim: HD Edition were also showcased some.

  • Microsoft’s stage included further looks at Halo Wars 2, Gears of War 4 and Sea of Thieves, while they also announced Forza Horizon 3, and Dead Rising 4.

  • Ubisoft announced Trails of the Blood Dragon, Grow Up, Steep; while also showing off For Honor, Watch Dogs 2, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and the new South Park title.

  • Sony announced a God of War reboot, and a Zombie shooter Days Gone. Capcom took the stage with a new Resident Evil, while Kojima showed off his new title -Death Stranding. A Crash Bandicoot trilogy remaster was also announced. We got a better look at Detroit Become Human, Horizon Zero Dawn, and obviously an extensive look at their headset.

There was a mass of other news, of course, and a lot of other trailers (remember: this post!); but, that’s not really what we’re meant to be covering in these round-ups, so that’s enough of that then.

On the release front, Hearts of Iron IV, Brigador, Dangerous Golf, The Technomancer, and Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter all launched; as did The Solus Project and Dead by Daylight. Inside launched onto the Xbox One, Prison Architect and 7 Days to Die made it to consoles, and Umbrella Corps launched for PC & PS4.

As for Big Boss Battle? A month old at the end of E3 we were mainly focused on just plodding along and growing in contributor numbers. We posted 79 posts during the month, including 27 reviews and feature pieces, and 31 Greenlight Highlights.
